With topics ranging from new friendships to clique power and undesirable relationships, students are urged to be good to themselves and others by forming strong, healthy relationships at school.

INCLUDES STORIES ABOUT: The new kid in class • Picking on differences • Easing out of friendships • When it hurts inside • Some jokes are not funny • Alone but not lonely • You CAN be yourself • Saying the first hellos • You don’t have to be friends • A fair chance for all

PLUS: Resources suitable for individual reflection and group discussions
Media Smart
GET MEDIA SMART: Media Literacy

SYNOPSIS: More than ever before, the media dominate the lives of children and teens. The Censorship Review Committee report of 2010 has stressed that it is impossible to shield the young completely from harmful content: promoting media literacy is the way to go. In this volume featuring articles from our popular Media Smart series, MIX magazine alerts youth to common tricks that are used by advertisers and others who wish to influence their target audiences. Since the media aren’t just a threat – they can be fulfilling and fun – this issue will include clever tips readers can use for greater impact when publishing photos, art and written work.

FOR: Primary 6 and secondary students.

INCLUDES STORIES ABOUT: Is what you see what you get? The difference between advertising images and the actual products. • Camera tricks in the news. Photographs show you real things but not everything. • How sponsorship may promote cigarettes, gambling and alcohol. • All that movie stuff: How merchandising makes you part with your money. • TV sound bites don’t say enough: viewers stay in the dark because serious talk gets less air time. • Making the most of internet sources without getting misled. • How to write honestly – without cause hurt.

PLUS: Written exercises, group activities.
Elections
ELECTIONS

This issue was published at the time of the May 2011 General Elections.

SYNOPSIS: It’s a not-to-missed opportunity for citizenship education. We’ll be ready with our pre-election special, helping students understand what this event is all about. Although schoolchildren are too young to vote, it is not too early to explain to them the basic workings of our democratic system and why it’s so important that people make the right choices.

FOR: Primary 4 to Secondary 4.

INCLUDES STORIES ABOUT: How we got the vote: our founding fathers’ struggle for independence from colonial rule. • The election process explained in graphics: the Writ of Election, Nomination Day, Polling Day, the opening of the new Parliament. • The work of a Member of Parliament. • Election art: colours and symbols used by political parties around the world. • Election maths: the different ways that votes are counted around the world. • Dirty tricks: How the election process is subverted in some countries, through ballot stuffing, ghost voters and other tactics. • In school: Mock elections and parliaments.

PLUS: Resources for teachers.
